Every summer the same question comes up in Riyadh homes: the bill jumped, so is it the AC or something else? The short answer is that air conditioning takes the biggest share of household consumption in the hot months — the Saudi Energy Efficiency Center puts it at roughly 60% to 70% of summer household load. That is a national figure though, and it will not help you much. What helps is calculating your own unit.
The equation you need
Any appliance's consumption comes from one equation: power in kilowatts × hours running × price per kilowatt-hour. The residential electricity tariff in the Kingdom starts at 18 halalah per kWh for consumption up to 6,000 kWh a month and rises to 30 halalah above that, with 15% VAT added on the total.
The tier is the number that matters. A home that crosses 6,000 kWh in a single month — common in Riyadh villas in July and August — pays roughly double for every unit after that. That is why the jump in the bill looks far bigger than the increase in running hours.

Figures use the first tariff tier and exclude VAT. If your home passes 6,000 kWh in the month, multiply by roughly 1.6 for the units that fall into the higher tier.
Add up every unit in the house this way and you will land close to the air-conditioning portion of your actual bill. If the gap between your calculation and the real bill is large, the problem is not your habits — it is the condition of the equipment.

What actually raises AC consumption
The first line matters most. An outdoor coil caked in Riyadh dust cannot reject heat, so the compressor runs longer and draws a higher current. This is not theory: the difference shows immediately on a clamp meter before and after a wash.
24°C is not an arbitrary number
The Saudi Energy Efficiency Center's air-conditioning campaign asks households to set thermostats to 24°C. The reason is simple engineering: every degree below that raises consumption by roughly 6%, because the gap between room temperature and target widens and the compressor stays on longer before it cuts out.
And the most common mistake: setting 16°C to cool the room faster. The unit removes heat at a fixed rate no matter what number is set; the number only decides when the compressor stops. The only result of a low setting is a compressor that never switches off, a higher bill and a shorter life.
Standard unit versus inverter
A conventional AC runs fully on or fully off. An inverter varies compressor speed with demand, so once the room reaches temperature it keeps running slowly instead of cycling on and off. In practice that is a 30% to 50% difference in consumption for the same capacity.
That does not mean replacing every unit today is the right call. A unit under five years old and well maintained will cost more to replace than it saves. The maths starts to work on a unit past eight years that needs a major repair.
When a high bill means a fault, not a habit
There is a difference between a high summer bill and a bill with a fault behind it. Signs that point to a fault:
- A sudden rise with no change in occupancy, running hours or weather
- The AC runs continuously and never switches off, even at night
- Less than 8°C difference between the vent and the room
- The compressor starts and stops every few minutes (short cycling)
- Ice on the copper line or on the indoor coil
Any one of these is worth a pressure and amperage test before you blame your habits. A unit that has not been serviced in two years can draw 20% to 30% more than an equivalent one that has, and that gap shows clearly in a July bill.
Frequently asked questions
Is switching the AC off when I leave cheaper than leaving it running?
In most cases yes. If you will be out for more than two hours, switching off wins, because re-cooling the room costs less than running the unit through your whole absence. For very short absences the difference is small. Better than either is a timer or smart thermostat that raises the setpoint while you are out rather than switching off entirely.
Why is my bill higher than my neighbour's for the same size house?
Common reasons: the age and condition of the units, inverter versus conventional, which way the facade faces and how much sun it takes, insulation and window quality, and how many hours the family is home. Service condition alone can explain a 20% to 30% gap between two identical houses.
Does cleaning the AC really save money?
Yes, and the difference is measurable. A dirty coil forces the compressor to work at higher pressure and higher current for the same cooling. In Riyadh dust specifically, cleaning every three months keeps consumption at its normal level, and twice a year is the minimum worth doing.
