Riyadh is a city where families move often, and every move means air conditioners coming off walls and going back up somewhere else. The trouble is that removal looks simple — undo some bolts and pipes and carry the unit — when it is actually a technical procedure with one correct order.
A technician who opens the joints straight away releases the entire refrigerant charge into the air in seconds. You then pay for a full charge at the new installation, and you inherit air and moisture inside the circuit.
The correct procedure: pumping the gas into the outdoor unit
The refrigerant can all be sealed inside the compressor and condenser in the outdoor unit before removal. The procedure is called pump-down and takes minutes:
- Run the AC in cooling mode until the compressor is running steadily.
- Close the high-pressure valve (the thin pipe) with an Allen key.
- Let it keep running — the compressor is now drawing refrigerant from the line and indoor unit into the outdoor one.
- After about a minute, or when the pressure reading reaches zero, close the low-pressure valve (the thick pipe).
- Switch the AC off immediately, then isolate the power.
- Only now are the joints opened. The gas is safely sealed inside the outdoor unit.
If the technician is not using a manifold gauge during this, they are guessing. Closing too early leaves gas in the line that escapes on removal; closing too late has the compressor running against a vacuum and drawing air in from the other side.

The first two together account for more than half of cases, and both are avoided at no cost — the first by using the correct order, the second by cutting the pipe end and making a fresh flare rather than reusing an end that has already been tightened and released once.

Why the outdoor unit must not be inverted
There is lubricating oil in the base of the compressor. If the unit is inverted or tilted steeply while being carried, that oil migrates into the gas lines. On start-up the oil is pushed round the circuit and the compressor is left under-lubricated. The result does not show immediately — it shows months later as a loud noise, then failure.
If tilting is unavoidable, the unit must stand level for several hours before it is switched on so the oil can settle back.
Five questions to ask before agreeing
- Will you pump the gas into the outdoor unit before removal?
- Do you have manifold gauges and a vacuum pump?
- Will you make a fresh flare or reuse the old joint?
- Does the price include new copper if the run is a different length at the new place?
- Will you give me a pressure reading after start-up?
Frequently asked questions
How long does removing and refitting a split AC take?
Three to four hours for one unit if the new location is ready with a wall opening and a power point. Removal alone is about an hour; refitting is two to three including evacuation and testing. Anyone promising both within an hour will be skipping essential steps.
Do I need new refrigerant after a move?
Not if pump-down was done properly. The whole charge is sealed in the outdoor unit and returns to the circuit when the valves are opened. Needing a new charge means either the gas was released during removal, or the new run is longer and needs a calculated top-up.
The AC cooled well before the move and is weak now. Why?
The three common causes in order: part of the charge lost during removal, a leak at a reused flare joint, or no evacuation before opening the valves so air stayed in the circuit. All three are diagnosed from a single pressure reading.
