AC dripping water inside the room? 6 causes and how to tell in 10 minutes

Water coming from the indoor unit is never normal. The good news is that where it comes out narrows the cause down almost conclusively.

Every AC produces water, and that is normal and intended. Humid air passes over a cold coil and the vapour condenses on it, exactly as it does on a cold glass. That water drops into the tray under the coil, then leaves through the drain pipe.

So the problem is not that there is water — it is that the water did not find its way out. That limits the possibilities to a very small number, and you can narrow them further just by noticing where exactly the water appears.

The table that settles it

Where the water comes fromLikely causeWho fixes it
Middle or underside, heavy flowBlocked drain pipeTechnician — clear the drain
One side onlyUnit not level, or tilted wrongTechnician — reset the fall
Spray with the air from the ventsCoil freezing then thawingTechnician — refrigerant or filters
Slow steady drip, drain is clearCracked condensate trayTechnician — repair or replace tray
Water appears only after switch-offIce built up while running, then meltedTechnician — pressure and filter check
Water on the copper pipe itselfFailed insulation, condensing on the pipeTechnician — re-insulate

Check these three before you call

  1. Switch the AC off at the remote and then at the breaker, and leave it fifteen minutes. If there was ice it will melt, and you will know the problem is freezing rather than drainage.
  2. Open the front cover and pull both filters. If light will not pass through them you have probably found the cause — wash them in lukewarm water and let them dry completely.
  3. Go out to where the drain pipe ends. If it is not dripping while the AC runs on a humid day, the pipe is blocked.

Those three steps resolve the simple cases and save you a visit. If dripping continues with clean filters and a clear drain, the problem is either the tray or the refrigerant charge, and both need the unit opened.

Where the problem actually is

Causes of AC dripping in Riyadh call-outs

Distribution of cases we attended in Riyadh homes over the summer season
Blocked drain pipe41%
Blocked filters and freezing22%
Cracked condensate tray14%
Unit tilted wrong11%
Low refrigerant8%
Failed pipe insulation4%

Four in ten call-outs come down to a blocked drain. In Riyadh specifically the reason is dust: airborne grit sticks to the wet coil, turns to mud, washes down with the water and settles in the pipe until it seals it. A drain that runs horizontally for a long stretch, or has a dip that holds water, blocks far faster.

A note on the cracked tray

This one gets misdiagnosed constantly. A technician arrives, clears the drain and leaves, then the dripping returns days later. The distinguishing sign is that the water comes slowly and steadily with no blockage in the pipe, and appears from the sides of the unit rather than the centre. Plastic trays in units past five years old crack from repeated thermal expansion.

Why not to leave it

  • Water tracking into a wall does not dry out — it sits behind the paint as permanent damp
  • Damp behind a wall grows mould, which is a direct cause of odours and breathing problems
  • Water reaching a socket or a cable run inside the wall is a genuine hazard
  • A coil that freezes repeatedly damages the compressor, the most expensive part in the unit
  • Ceiling and wall staining costs many times more in paint and making good than clearing a drain
A practical rule: sudden heavy water means a blocked drain; a slow steady drip means the tray. The first is a half-hour job, the second needs a part.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clear the drain pipe myself?

Sometimes. If the end of the pipe is reachable outside, you can push air through it with a hand pump or draw the mud out with a wet vacuum. But do not push wire down the pipe — a hole made in the pipe or the tray turns a one-hour job into a spare part.

The AC only drips on certain days. Why?

Because the amount of condensate changes with humidity. On humid days the unit makes more water than a partly blocked pipe can carry, so it overflows. The blockage is there all the time; it only shows when the load rises. That is an early warning worth clearing before the pipe seals completely.

Does dripping mean the AC needs gas?

Not necessarily — it is the least likely item on the list. Low refrigerant causes dripping only indirectly: low pressure freezes the coil, then the ice melts all at once and overflows the tray. But in that case cooling would be weak too. If cooling is fine and water is appearing, the cause is drainage, not gas.
