Waste water backs up at the lowest opening in the system. That is why a ground-floor bathroom floods because of what the upper floors flushed, and why attacking the visible drain rarely solves anything. The blockage has to be located before it can be removed, which is the opposite of how most people approach it.

Note that the top two are things people deliberately put down the drain. Wipes labelled “flushable” pass the toilet and then stop, because they do not break apart in water the way paper does; grease pours as a liquid and sets as a solid a few metres along the pipe. Together they form a mass that no plunger will move.
Why drain acid is the wrong answer
- It rarely dissolves a solid mass of wipes and grease — it just sits on top of it.
- It attacks pipe joints and older PVC, turning a blockage into a leak.
- It makes the standing water dangerous for whoever opens the line afterwards.
- It has to be declared to the technician, and many will refuse to work on a line that has been acid-treated.

Is high-pressure jetting safe for old pipes?
Pressure is set according to pipe material and condition, which is why the camera goes in first. On fragile lines we clear mechanically instead.
Why does the same drain block every few months?
Repeat blockages in the same place usually mean a pipe defect — a sagging section, a broken joint or root ingress — which a camera survey will show. Clearing it again without looking only resets the clock.
Do you attend at night for a flooding drain?
