Open the distribution board in any house and ask the owner: which of these protects you? The usual answer is “all of them.” That is not right. Ordinary breakers protect wiring, not people. The difference between the two is the difference between a fire avoided and a fatal shock.
Two completely different devices

The idea behind an RCD is simple and clever: in a healthy circuit, all current leaving the live conductor returns through the neutral. If some of it passes through a person to earth instead, the balance breaks. The device notices a tiny difference and cuts power within a fraction of a second — before the shock becomes fatal.
An ordinary breaker notices none of this. The current that can kill a person is far below the current that makes a normal breaker trip. That is why having an RCD in the board is not a luxury.
The thirty-second test
An RCD has a small button marked T or Test. Its job is to simulate a real leak and confirm the mechanism still works.
- Tell the household the power will cut for a moment, and shut down sensitive equipment.
- Press the Test button on the RCD.
- It should trip instantly and cut power to the circuits it covers.
- Reset it. If it did not trip when pressed, the device is faulty and is not protecting you — replace it immediately.
This test is worth doing once a month. The mechanical parts inside can seize over the years, especially in dusty conditions, so the device looks fine while doing nothing. One monthly test reveals that.

The last item is the most dangerous even though it is the least common. Fitting a 32 A breaker on cable rated for 20 A means the cable heats and burns before the breaker notices anything. It usually happens when a breaker trips repeatedly and somebody decides to fit a bigger one instead of fixing the cause.
Signs you do not need a technician to notice

- A smell like burning plastic near the board or a socket
- Blackening or cracking around any socket
- A slight tingle when touching a washing machine, fridge or outdoor AC casing
- Lights dimming noticeably when the AC or washing machine starts
- Breakers with no identification labels
That slight tingle from a metal appliance body deserves a special mention. It is not normal and it is not static. It means current is finding its way to the casing, and the earthing is either weak or absent. In villas with metal outdoor AC units on the roof this fault is the most dangerous of all, because the roof is usually wet during cleaning.
Load distribution: why the kitchen trips every evening
A recurring complaint: the breaker trips every night at cooking time. The cause is usually not a fault but arithmetic. An oven, kettle, microwave and fridge on one circuit can exceed the breaker's rating when they run together.
The correct fix is to redistribute the load across more circuits, or run a dedicated line for high-draw appliances. The wrong fix — and the common one — is a bigger breaker. The first addresses the cause; the second removes the warning and leaves the hazard.
