If dirt were causing the smell, cleaning would end it for good. That it returns every time means one thing: there is an open path between the drainage network and the air in your bathroom. Correct plumbing blocks that path completely, so if a smell appears, one of two barriers has failed.
The two barriers that stop the smell
First: the water trap. Under every basin, floor gully and toilet there is a U-shaped bend in the pipe that stays permanently full of water. That water is not an accident — it is a seal that stops drain gases rising. Water passes through it; gas cannot.
Second: the vent stack. A pipe that runs from the drainage network up to the roof and opens to outside air. Its job is to equalise pressure: when a large slug of water rushes down a pipe, the network has to draw air from somewhere. If the vent is blocked, it pulls that air through the nearest trap instead, emptying it of water — and opening the path for the smell.
Why traps dry out in Riyadh specifically
Riyadh's climate is very dry and very hot, which evaporates trap water far faster than in humid regions. A bathroom unused for two weeks — a guest room, a closed apartment, a laundry floor gully — loses its trap water entirely to evaporation, turning the pipe into an open hole onto the drain.
That explains the most common observation: the smell is worse after travelling or a period away. It is also the easiest fault on the whole list to fix.
A test to find the source
- Pour a bucket of water into every floor gully, basin and toilet in the house, including the ones you never use.
- Add a spoon of cooking oil to rarely used gullies — the oil layer floats on the water and slows evaporation considerably.
- Wait a full day. If the smell has gone it was a dry trap, and the fix is running water at that point periodically.
- If the smell returns within days despite full traps, the problem is the vent or a broken joint.
- Close all the bathroom doors and open one per day to work out which is the source.

One sign that deserves special attention
If you hear gurgling from a gully or toilet when another basin drains or the washing machine runs, that is a classic sign of a blocked vent. The sound is the network pulling air through the trap water. Ignoring it means the smell will persist however much you clean, because the traps will be emptied every time.
Vent pipes on Riyadh rooftops block with dust, bird nests, and occasionally plastic bags blown onto them. Checking one is simple and needs nothing broken open.
What does not work
- Air fresheners — they mask the smell and treat nothing
- Pouring large amounts of bleach — it kills the useful bacteria in the septic system and attacks pipework
- Sealing a gully with a tight cover — it traps the gas briefly, then it finds another way out
- Vinegar and baking soda — useful on light residue, but it will not fill a dry trap or open a vent
Frequently asked questions
The smell only appears at night. What explains that?
Usually pressure difference. At night the air cools and building use drops, so airflow inside the drainage network changes direction and pushes gases up rather than drawing them down. That points at the vent rather than the trap.
Is sewer smell dangerous to health?
Drain gases contain hydrogen sulphide and methane. At typical household concentrations they are more unpleasant than dangerous, but prolonged exposure causes headaches, nausea and eye irritation. Their presence also means there is an open path that insects can climb.
I have tried everything and the smell is in a ground-floor apartment. Why?
Ground floors sit closest to the main drain line and take higher gas pressure. They also tend to have more floor gullies, used less often. If the traps are full and the vent is clear, what remains is a break in the buried line, and that needs a camera inspection.
